In spite of your best efforts to ensure that your house is sparkling clean, your carpets tend to become a victim of spills, drops, accidents or whatever may be at the bottom of your feet. This is exactly why they need to be cleaned regularly and by professionals. The following are the top 10 secrets used by experts to keep your carpet looking new and tidy, every time:

  • Don’t rub stains, blot them – stains should be dabbed using a cleaning solution and a sponge, paper towels or a clean cloth. The key here is blotting, where you put little pressure on stains to soak them up. Rubbing stains can cause premature breakdown of carpet fibres. When blotting, ensure that you soak the stain inwards, otherwise, you will spread the stain.
  • The club soda process – NOTE, this process, when done correctly, is effective against wine and beer stains. When you spill soda on your carpet, and you have tried blotting and it doesn’t work, well, don’t panic, spray a solution of white vinegar and water on the stain and then wait for 10 to 15 minutes for it to soak in. then, blot the stained area again using a sponge or a clean piece of cloth to soak the stain and the solution. Repeat this process remove the stain completely. After the stain is gone, rinse the spot using warm water, brush the carpet strands to their natural direction using your hand, and finally lay a paper towel over the spot to absorb the dampness off of the carpet
  • Try shaving cream – the shaving cream can remove almost any stain. If you have a stain in your carpet, apply the cream on the stain and wait for about 30 minutes. Then, blot the cream away using a dry sponge or cloth. After doing this, spray the spot with a solution of vinegar and water and then wipe the solution away with a sponge.
  • Freeze-dried gum – when a chewing gum gets stuck in your carpet, it can be gross and messy, right? Well, if this happens, getting it out is pretty easy. Just head to your freezer and take several ice cubes, freeze the gum using the cubes for about 30 seconds. After it’s frozen, use a spoon to lift the gum up, and if still stuck to the carpet strands, cut the strands as close to the gum as humanly possible. If you do it correctly, the spot will be clean and will be unnoticeable.
  • Dishwasher detergent vs. grease – grease stains on your carpet are the worst as they are difficult to remove. However, the best method to clean them is by use of an anti-grease dishwashing detergent, which cuts through the grease stain in your carpet the same way it does on your dishes. Spray the solution of this detergent on the stain and then blot it up. You may require to repeat this several times depending on the size of the stain.
  • Heat wax – as we all know, burning candles can result in wax dripping on your carpet. Where it is embedded quickly since it dries fast. When this happens, heat the wax again using an iron. Cover your iron with a white piece of cloth and then place it on top of the wax stain to heat it up. Then scrape the melted wax off your carpet using a butter knife. After doing this, then place a paper towel over the wax stain, and place your iron over the towel. This towel absorbs the melting wax, and after a few more applications, the wax would be completely gone. NOTE: don’t use your iron this way for long as you risk burning your carpet, and also, ensure you don’t use coloured clothes and towels as you will transfer the colour to your carpet, especially if it’s light-coloured.
  • Using Hydrogen peroxide – after suffering a cut on your finger, and then notice later that you dripped a little blood on your carpet, hydrogen peroxide is what you need to get your carpet looking as good as previously was. First, you will clean the stain with water and detergents, to loosen up the dried blood. Then try to scrape off as much blood as you possibly can from the carpet fibres. After that, apply hydrogen peroxide on whatever remains of the stain – this solution will foam as soon it gets in contact with the blood. Finally, dab the solution with towels or sponge to dry the carpet.
  • Clean any messes caused by pets organically – when your pet messes your carpets, you should use organic cleaners, instead of using chemicals. Just spray the cleaner on the stains, scrub, and then wipe the cleaner with a towel or a piece of cloth. These cleaners are very effective when it comes to cleaning coffee or sauces messes off your carpet.
  • Candy crushed – also, with kids in your house, it’s only a matter of time before they mess your carpet with candy. When this happens, use a butter knife or a spotter brush to scrub the messed candy off. Then, apply water and soap using a sponge onto the stain, which will ensure that you get all the sugar off your carpet. Once all the candy is gone, dry the carpet area with a towel or a white piece of cloth.
  • Deep-clean regularly – it is for a fact that cleaning your carpet regularly is key to keeping it looking new and fresh. For this particular reason, always consider steam-cleaning it, which involves applying a cleaning solution deep into the carpet through water-jet nozzles. The machine will then absorb the solution off of the carpet along with the debris and dirt. When you deep-clean your carpet, you allow water to penetrate deep into the carpet fibre thus loosening up any embedded soil. It also removes grease and oil deposits thereby getting your carpet looking cleaner, even more than it has ever been.

So generally, if you are to follow these cleaning tips to the letter, there is no reason why you will ever have a problem keeping your carpets clean and tidy at all times.
